The privatization of agriculture has opened the door for farmers to earn good profits and to give them an opportunity to raise their standard of living. This was unimaginable when they collectively farmed the land under the people's commune system and sold all of their output to the government at fixed prices.
Many of China's famous Economic and Technological Development Zones (ETDZ's) were formerly the sites of people's communes and in these areas, farmers who sold some of their land to developers, have been reaping twofold profits. Riding through the countryside today, you'll see many newly constructed, two-story homes built by the farmers with profits earned from selling their produce at the "free markets" and selling some of their land to developers.
