| China never went through the "paper bag stage" in its modernization. It went directly from bringing your own reusable shopping basket to the plastic bag era. Older people still bring their own shopping baskets, but plastic bags provided by the vendors are ever-present and favored by younger shoppers. |  Older people prefer their own baskets. |
