Morning Markets  zaochang.gif (247 bytes)
The morning markets throughout China get underway at 5:30 a.m. and operate 7 days a week so people can get their shopping done  before they head off to work. All cities have morning markets, though in larger cities, they can be found only in a few residential areas. These morning markets are in a centrally located road, alleyway or a plaza that is put to other uses during the day. Markets close by 8:00 a.m., in time for the business day to begin.

All-Day Markets caichang.gif (262 bytes)
After the morning markets close, shoppers can go to the all-day markets that typically open around 8:00 a.m.  In Beijing, where there are very few morning markets, most shoppers use the all-day markets, which are outdoor or in semi-enclosed arcades. These all-day markets are open for about 12 hours a day, generally closing about 7 - 8 p.m. The majority of vendors are resellers, though some farmers participate during the early morning hours.
