Free-Wheeling Vendor This husband and wife team have a brutal daily routine. They rent farm land about a 3-hour bike ride southwest of Beijing. He makes a daily round-trip to the farm by bicycle cart to pick up fresh produce. Leaving the city at 2 a.m., he arrives at the farm about 5 a.m., takes a nap, tends the farm, then loads up his bike for the 3-hour ride back to the city. He arrives back in the city at 8 p.m. with a load of produce for his wife to sell the next day, then he heads back to the farm at 2 a.m. after 6 hours of sleep. She spends the night with her parents who live in the near-by apartment building. They never sell at designated free market areas. |
