Getting Produce to Market: Bike Designs Page 5 of 5

Mudanjiang

In this northeastern city near the Siberian border, the bicycle carts are the reverse of those in Beijing.  Here, the 2-wheeled platform replaces the front wheel.  Farmers generally travel greater distances into this city center so their bicycle carts are equipped to carry more over longer distances.

Until just a few years ago, horses played a major role in transporting goods within the city of Beijing.  It's now rare to see them within the city limit.  But in the city of Mudanjiang, horses are still a major means of transporting produce from the farms to the free market centers. Farmers are allowed to park their horse carts on the sidewalk during the morning market hours. mdjhorse.jpg (9357 bytes)
