In the heart of the Chaoyang District on Beijing's east side, there is still an abundance of truck farms, a carryover from pre-1985 when this whole area was farmed under the People's Commune system. Today, the area is farmed by individual farmer families.

In 1995, a group of farmers built a market hall to serve as their retail shop and wholesale market. Farmers pay RMB 250(US$ 30) per month (inclusive of the market management fee and taxes) to rent table space at this market.
