All-Day Free Markets in Beijing Page 3 of 7

Typical Farmer at the San Li Tun Market
This young man moved to Beijing from a poor agricultural county in Shandong Province several years ago in search of a better life. He rents 10 mu (1.6 acres) of land about 30 km. south of Beijing and brings his produce to market on a motorized 3 wheeled-truck, a trip that takes an hour each way.

Enterprising farmer
originally from Shandong.

Bought his own
3-wheeled truck.

For an open space, in a prime location just outside the market entrance where he can attract customers before they enter the main market concourse, he pays:

Stall Rental Fee:     RMB 300/month (US$ 36) *
Turnover Tax:         RMB 200/month (US$ 24)
Management Fee:    RMB 100/month (US$ 12)

   *   By comparison, metal stalls inside the market rent for
         RMB 30/day, about US$ 3.60/day or US$ 100/month.

He bitterly complains about paying an equivalent of $72/month in fees and taxes, but he also readily admits that he nets very good income and he's very happy that he moved to Beijing.
