"Head
of a Savage"
(man tou)
This is a deceptively fierce name for a very simple, unflavored breadstuff -- China's closest equivalent to western-style bread. But the Chinese version is steamed, not baked. One small steamed "loaf" costs 5 jiao (US$ 0.006). | |

This bread was created in the Qin Dynasty (220 b.c.) to sculpted into the shape of a savage's head (people from the Man tribe) for sacrificial ceremonies. Today, "man tou" serves only as a general breadstuff. |
